There will always be temptations

How are your plans for getting on-track "after the new year" going?  It's hard during the holidays to resist temptation isn't it?  There is so much candy, cake, pies and other treats around.

But wait, I was just at the grocery store today, and as far as I could tell, all the same stuff that was there in December is still there now, is just has a pastel color to it.

Have you noticed?  Christmas turns to St. Valentine's Day with chocolates, which becomes St. Patrick's Day with green cookies and beer, and then that sort of molds into Easter with candy and more family get-togethers.

And if that isn't enough, we are moving toward travel season:  BBQ parties, 4th of July, and then… Fall and Halloween candy and it starts ALL over again.  And in between, there is Mother's Day, Father's Day, birthdays and all sorts of other situations just waiting to derail your weight-loss plan.

It never stops.  There is just never going to be a "good" time to start a weight-loss program or to get healthier.  Check that, I should say there is never going to be a BETTER time to start than today, whatever today happens to be.

For a food and exercise plan to be successful, it has to be live-able.  It has to be something that will fit in with your daily life and allow you to participate in all the things that make life worth living.

Yes, there are going to be times when it is easier to eat healthy and get exercise.  Take advantage of those days, especially if you have several of them in a row, so that you can gain a bit of ground and momentum to help you over the next hurdle.

Life is just not going to stop happening while you get yourself healthy.  Yes, there are a few elite folks in the world that can head off to a spa for months at a time.  And then there are the rest of us: those who attend family functions, feed a family on crazy busy days, go to business lunches and birthday parties, and have to figure out how to stay on a healthy plan.

Your best bet is moderation and planning.  When you go to a party, don't go hungry.  Keep healthy snacks with you in your car, purse or desk so you don't get so starved that you eat whatever you can find.  And if you find yourself in a situation where you want to indulge a bit, plan for it and allow it, in moderation.  And enjoy it too!

Don't think that you have to stop living altogether in order to live healthy.  Learn to live your life and enjoy it.  After all, that's why you want to be healthy in the first place, to have a longer and more enjoyable life.
