Walking has more benefits than just getting you from here to there

Now is the time of year when we are reminded of why we live in the Phoenix area: our beautiful weather.  Why not get the most out of it by starting a walking routine?  Our bodies were designed to move.  Only a hundred years ago or less, people generally got where they needed to go by walking.

Best of all, it's such an easy thing to do.  All you have to do is get up, put one foot in front of the other and repeat.

Still not motivated to get up from the sofa?  Let's talk about some of the benefits.

There are many direct physical benefits which include, but are not limited to:  lower blood pressure, stable blood sugar, lowered risk of heart attack, lowered risk of stroke, more energy, better sleep quality and better weight control.

You also have some wonderful mental and emotional benefits:

  • Walking can help to clear your head.  If you have something you need to think through or you are feeling a bit overwhelmed with life, a brisk walk can bring about clarity of thought and help you to gain focus and perspective.

  • You can use your walk as bonding time.  Walking can provide time for you and family members to interact without distraction.  Even if your family dinner time is hectic, your walk can be a great time to catch up on the day or make plans together.

  • The increase in your energy level will help you to be more productive in your day.  Feeling productive will help to keep your overall outlook more positive.

So, what excuses do people use to avoid walking?

  • Not enough time?  All you need is about 30 minutes which can be broken into two or three 10 or 15 minute segments.  Although it may seem difficult to take those breaks throughout the day, your increase in energy, clarity and productivity will far outweigh the time you take away from your work.

  • Bad weather?  For the few days each year that we experience that here, you can find an indoor venue.  Go to the mall, walk around the inside of your office, or just put on some music at home and walk around the house.

  • Physical limitations?  Are you physically not able to walk 30 minutes in a day?  That's okay, work up to it.  If at this point all you can do is five minutes at a time or less, do that.  Consistency is the key.  You might be able to add some extra movement by doing leg lifts while sitting.  Just sit at the edge of a stable seat and with your knees bent, lift them one at a time, in a simulated walk.

We've covered the benefits of walking and addressed the excuses.  Get out, enjoy the sunshine and get some fresh air.  I promise that you will be glad you did.

Until next time, stay healthy and be happy.
