Some tips for selecting a gym

Did you make a resolution this year to join a gym?  In order to be successful, here are some suggestions to consider:

Time of Day – When you go to check it out, go during the time of day that you plan to be there regularly.  This way you can check the crowd level.

Distance – People typically will not attend a gym that is more than five miles from either home or work. 

Main Focus / Specialty – I have found that gyms tend to focus their energy on one or two main areas.  Consider what your primary needs are and find a gym whose focus fits that need.  Some examples are:

Group Fitness Classes – Group fitness can alleviate workout boredom.  Take a look at their class schedule.  Are there classes you are interested in that are offered at a convenient time?  Is there a large variety of levels (beginner, intermediate, advanced)? 

Swimming – Are you interested in using the pool?  Do you want to swim laps on your own or take aqua classes?  Ask what temperature the pool is kept at.  A gym that caters to lap swimmers will keep the pool cooler than one that caters to aqua classes. 

Personal Training – Are you interested in working with a trainer?  Walk around and take a look at the trainers working.  Ask what certifications are required.  If necessary, ask if they have trainers who are specifically educated to work with special needs (arthritis, injuries, health issues, etc.).  Do they offer partner training?  If you have someone willing to sign up with you, this may make training a more affordable option.

Floor Cardio Equipment – Do you plan to pop in, get your time done while listening to your MP3 player and pop out?  Check out the number of cardio machines.  Also note how many have out-of-order signs on them.  Of course, if you are planning on working out during off-peak hours, finding a machine that you like will probably be easy.

Child care – This may be a big consideration for you. There are some gyms that offer a lot of services for keeping the kids entertained.  They also charge a hefty fee for this service.  If you are going to be using childcare services, be sure to check the hours they are offered, ask about adult / child ratios and inspect the area.

Affordability – What will your monthly dues include?  Some gyms charge extra for certain group fitness classes.  Sometimes you can pay slightly higher dues and have unlimited days of childcare.  Some gyms offer a reduced rate if you are planning to attend only on certain days of the week.

And of course, always ask for a one or two week free pass.  The best way to really check out a gym is to use it.
